FG Suspends Proposed Increase in WASSCE, NECO Registration Fees
The Federal Government has suspended the proposed review of registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), pending extensive consultations with key stakeholders.
The Federal Ministry of Education announced that the fee adjustment proposal contained in its letter dated June 18, 2026, has been withdrawn for the time being.
According to the ministry, the proposed increase was necessitated by the rising cost of conducting credible national examinations across the country.
However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be suspended in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive, transparent and evidence-based policymaking.
The ministry disclosed that it would engage examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, parents, organised labour and other relevant stakeholders before arriving at any decision on the proposed fee review.
It further assured Nigerians that no adjustment to the examination registration fees would take effect until the consultation process is concluded.
The Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of students while ensuring the continued delivery of credible and sustainable public examinations across the country.
