Former U.S. Merchant Ship Captain Pleads Guilty to S3xual Assault of Maritime Cadet
A former United States merchant ship captain has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 21-year-old cadet from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, bringing a major criminal case that highlighted concerns over sexual abuse within the maritime industry closer to its conclusion.
John Merrone entered guilty pleas on Friday before a federal court in Brooklyn, New York, admitting to five criminal counts, including aggravated sexual abuse, sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact.
According to U.S. prosecutors, the offences occurred aboard a commercial vessel where the victim was serving as part of her mandatory sea-year training programme.
By pleading guilty, Merrone avoided a full trial but now faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Sentencing is expected to take place at a later date.
The case attracted national attention in the United States after allegations of sexual assault involving maritime cadets prompted renewed scrutiny of safety conditions aboard commercial ships used for training.
