According to findings in Microbiology and gut health research, gas is produced when beneficial bacteria in the digestive system break down fibre and complex carbohydrates. This process, known as Fermentation, releases gases such as hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide.

Researchers from King’s College London have linked a diverse gut microbiome to improved digestion, stronger immunity, and better overall health outcomes, including mental well-being.

Scientists describe the connection between the digestive system and mental health as the Gut-Brain Axis, highlighting how gut activity can influence mood and cognitive function.

Nutrition experts note that foods commonly associated with gas—such as Lentils, Beans, Broccoli, and Oats—are rich in fibre and play a crucial role in feeding beneficial gut bacteria.

A 2022 study published in the scientific journal Cell Host & Microbe further found that high-fibre diets significantly increase microbial diversity, reinforcing the importance of fibre-rich nutrition in maintaining gut health.

Experts advise that while gas is generally a normal and healthy function, persistent discomfort or unusual symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
