Friend Recounts Nurse Mary Habila’s Final Moments Before Tragic Death in Ebonyi
More details have emerged surrounding the death of Mary Habila, a young nurse attached to the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences (DUFUS), as her close friend and colleague, Anita Baaki, has reportedly provided an account of her final moments.
Habila’s death has generated public concern and speculation, with calls for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to an account attributed to Baaki, a physiotherapist who travelled with Habila to Ebonyi State, the two women were among staff members who travelled from Abuja to the state on June 24, 2026, for official duties under the Ministry of Works.
They were reportedly accommodated in separate adjoining rooms at a staff chalet located within the country home of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in Uburu.
Baaki reportedly clarified that the chalet was designated for staff and associates and was separate from the Minister’s personal residence.
According to her account, on the evening of June 26, Habila returned to the chalet after having her hair done and visited Baaki in her room to show her the new hairstyle.
The two friends reportedly spent time chatting and joking before Habila told Baaki that she was tired and wanted to take a shower before going to bed.
“That was the last time I saw her alive,” Baaki was quoted as saying in the account.
The following morning, Baaki reportedly became worried after Habila failed to come out of her room and did not respond to phone calls.
After repeated knocks went unanswered and the door was found locked from the inside, other staff members reportedly forced it open.
Habila was allegedly found unconscious on the floor near the door and was immediately rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The circumstances surrounding the nurse’s death remain a subject of concern, with calls for a full investigation and forensic examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Senator David Umahi has reportedly expressed sadness over the incident and called for a comprehensive forensic investigation and autopsy to establish the facts surrounding the death.
The development has left colleagues, friends and members of the public mourning the death of the young healthcare professional, whose life was cut short under circumstances that remain under investigation.
