Gambia Navy Foils Illegal Migration Attempt, Intercepts 207 Suspected Migrants
The Gambia Navy has successfully foiled an attempted irregular migration operation, intercepting a boat carrying 207 suspected migrants within the country’s territorial waters near Kunta Kinteh Island in Juffureh.
The operation, carried out on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, was conducted in collaboration with Guardia Civil personnel as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime security and combat illegal migration.
According to the Gambia Armed Forces, the intercepted vessel was believed to be transporting individuals attempting the dangerous sea journey to Europe.
The group comprised 137 males and 70 females, including 11 minors.
Following the interception, all those on board were safely rescued, taken into custody and processed for subsequent handover to the appropriate authorities in line with established procedures.
The Gambia Armed Forces said the successful operation demonstrates the Navy’s continued vigilance in safeguarding the country’s territorial waters while supporting national and regional efforts to combat irregular migration, human trafficking, migrant smuggling and other forms of transnational organised crime.
The military reiterated that irregular migration by sea remains highly dangerous, warning that many migrants risk losing their lives while travelling in overcrowded and unseaworthy boats operated by human traffickers and migrant smugglers.
It urged members of the public, particularly young people, to avoid embarking on unsafe migration journeys and instead pursue legal and legitimate pathways for travel, education, employment and other opportunities.
