Ghana has taken a major step towards preparing its young population for the digital future by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI), coding and computer programming into the basic school curriculum, covering learners from kindergarten through junior high school.

The initiative is aimed at exposing children to digital skills from an early age and equipping them with the knowledge needed to navigate an increasingly technology-driven world.

By introducing coding and AI concepts at the foundational level, Ghana is seeking to move beyond simply teaching children how to use technology and encourage them to understand how digital systems work and eventually create and innovate with technology.

The policy also reflects the growing importance of artificial intelligence, automation and digital skills in education, employment and economic development.

However, the success of the initiative will depend heavily on implementation. Schools will require well-trained teachers, functional computers, reliable electricity, internet connectivity and appropriate learning materials to ensure that students across the country benefit equally.

Education stakeholders say bridging the digital divide will be particularly important so that the programme does not benefit only schools in well-equipped urban communities.

Ultimately, Ghana’s ambition is to raise a generation that is not merely a consumer of technology, but one capable of building, developing and shaping the technologies of the future.

From the classroom to the digital world, Ghana is preparing its children to become creators of tomorrow’s technology.
