Gov Makinde Attributes Bodija Explosion to Illegal Miners, Assures Full Investigation
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has attributed the explosion that rocked the Bodija area of Ibadan on Tuesday to illegal miners, as he visited the scene of the incident Tuesday night. Preliminary investigations by security agencies, according to the governor, revealed that the explosion was caused by explosive devices stored by these illegal miners.
Governor Makinde stated, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”
The explosion resulted in significant damage to numerous houses, located several kilometres away from the blast site. Governor Makinde, addressing the media during his visit, assured that comprehensive search and rescue operations were underway with deployed first responders and relevant agencies within Oyo State.
Providing an update on casualties, Governor Makinde confirmed two fatalities and 77 other people injured in the incident. He expressed condolences, saying, “May their souls rest in peace and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
The governor further directed that the government would cover the medical bills of all victims and ensure temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected, supporting them in rebuilding their lives.
Governor Makinde outlined the immediate response efforts, stating, “Earth moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security were deployed to the scene of the incident. The wounded and injured are being treated and moved to public and private hospitals within Ibadan. Medical personnel are on standby at these hospitals to provide all needed assistance to the injured. We have visited UCH to see some of those injured during the incident.”
As investigations continue, Governor Makinde assured the public that those responsible for the illegal storage of explosive devices would be held accountable for the tragic incident.
