‘He Expected ₦1 Million Because I’m Abroad’: Young Woman in Egypt Laments After Brother Rejects ₦50,000 She Sent for Medical Emergency

A young Nigerian woman working in Egypt has sparked conversations online after narrating how her brother rejected the ₦50,000 she sent to support his sick wife, insisting he expected nothing less than ₦500,000 to ₦1 million simply because she is “abroad.”

The woman, the last born in a family of seven, said her brother reached out to her urgently, pleading for financial help to take his wife to the hospital. Despite her modest earnings, she immediately sent what she could afford.

But instead of appreciation, her brother allegedly dismissed the money, believing she should have access to much more because she lives outside Nigeria.

The woman explained that she works in Cairo as a househelp, earning about ₦230,000 monthly, and survives under difficult conditions.

“I came from a family of 7 and I’m the last. My brother’s wife got sick and he pleaded that he needed money to take her to the hospital. I sent this man ₦50K. He said he was expecting between ₦500K to ₦1 million,” she wrote.

“Where I wan see am? They think say as I dey abroad I dey see money. Na just Egypt I dey. I dey Cairo dey do househelp. I’m sleeping in the kitchen… my bags are in the kitchen. The money dey tree I dey pluck am?”

She added that she only recently finished repaying the debt owed to the person who sponsored her travel, leaving her with almost no savings.

Her story has drawn sympathy from many, who say people often misunderstand the struggles Nigerians face abroad—especially domestic workers who live in harsh conditions while trying to support relatives back home.
