Industrial Action Disrupts Flights, Strands Passengers at Abuja Airport
Passengers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, were left stranded and frustrated on Tuesday morning as an industrial action by aviation workers disrupted flight operations.
The development resulted in chaotic scenes at the airport terminal, with travellers struggling to obtain clear information about the status of their flights and when normal operations would resume.
Passengers were initially prevented from entering the terminal before they were later allowed inside. However, uncertainty continued as many travellers remained unsure whether their flights would operate or what arrangements airlines had made for those affected by the disruption.
One of the affected passengers, Emeka “Silencer” Okoli, who was scheduled to travel to Enugu for the annual CIC Enugu Convention, described the situation as chaotic and frustrating.
According to Okoli, passengers, including families travelling with children, were left disappointed after being unable to proceed with their journeys as planned.
Although access to the terminal was eventually restored, he said the situation remained disorderly, with large crowds struggling to navigate the facility.
He also expressed concern over the lack of timely information for passengers, saying many travellers were still unclear about the aviation workers involved in the industrial action, how long it would last and what arrangements had been made for affected passengers.
“Passengers are suffocating from congestion. It’s either the ACs are not working or the crowd is simply too much for the ACs. This is so sad. Very terrible conditions,” he lamented.
The disruption has left numerous passengers anxious about their travel plans, particularly those travelling for important engagements and events.
Passengers are calling on aviation authorities, airline operators and other stakeholders to urgently resolve the dispute, restore normal operations and provide clear, timely information and assistance to travellers affected by the industrial action.
