According to reports by New Atlas, the app was released in beta on July 7, 2025, and quickly reached its limit of 10,000 TestFlight users, indicating strong interest from early adopters eager to explore an alternative form of digital communication.

Bitchat operates using Bluetooth and mesh networking technology, allowing encrypted messages to be sent directly between nearby devices. Messages can “hop” from one phone to another, extending communication range up to approximately 300 meters, without the need for mobile data, Wi-Fi, SIM cards, phone numbers, or centralized servers.

The decentralized design makes the app resistant to censorship and surveillance, as it does not rely on traditional internet infrastructure. This feature positions Bitchat as a potentially valuable tool in regions with limited, unreliable, or restricted internet access.

Although still in its beta stage, Bitchat is already being described as a possible game changer in messaging technology, offering a new model of secure, peer-to-peer communication beyond conventional online platforms.
