Kano Court Sentences 19-Year-Old Woman to Death for Murder of Husband Nine Days After Wedding

A Kano State High Court sitting along Miller Road has sentenced 19-year-old Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging after finding her guilty of the murder of her husband, Salisu Idris.

The court held that the prosecution successfully established the case beyond reasonable doubt in connection with the death of Idris, who was killed just nine days after his marriage to the convict.

The incident reportedly occurred on May 5, 2025, at Farawa Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. Earlier reports on the case stated that the couple had married on April 27, 2025.

According to the prosecution’s case, the deceased was allegedly poisoned through a drink before his throat was slit. Earlier reports, however, described the immediate circumstances differently, with witnesses alleging that the victim was attacked with a knife after being asked to close his eyes for a supposed surprise.

The victim was rushed to the hospital following the attack but was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Following the judgment, the court sentenced Saudat to death by hanging. The court also granted her 90 days within which to appeal the judgment.

The case has attracted significant attention because of the short period between the couple’s wedding and the fatal incident.
