Kenyan Domestic Worker Escapes Alleged Abuse in Saudi Arabia After Being Trapped in Freezer

A Kenyan woman, Susan Njoki, has recounted a harrowing ordeal while working as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia. Njoki claims she faced delayed salaries and repeated mistreatment from her employer, ultimately prompting her to plan a quiet escape.

According to her account, her employer allegedly monitored her through a hidden camera. When Njoki stepped outside to dispose of trash, she was confronted, assaulted, and forcibly locked inside a large meat freezer, typically used to store frozen food. She says she remained trapped for days without food or water, pleading for her life as the extreme cold made survival nearly impossible.

Njoki revealed that even the employer’s children pleaded for her release. She ultimately regained freedom by pretending to be mentally unstable, a strategy she credits with saving her life.

The case has reignited concerns about the treatment of domestic workers abroad and highlights the risks faced by migrant employees in some countries. Authorities and advocacy groups continue to call for stricter protections and oversight to prevent similar abuses.
