Labour declares indefinite strike from October 3

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have declared an indefinite and total strike beginning on Tuesday, October 3rd, in response to the Federal Government’s “challant attitude” and refusal to take steps to alleviate workers’ suffering following the removal of petroleum subsidies.

The decision was made during the NLC and TUC’s Joint National Executive Council and National Administration Council Meeting in Abuja.

The unions encouraged Nigerians to store their houses with enough food to endure the duration of the closure next week.

The two labour centres directed all their affiliates and state councils to begin mobilization ahead of the industrial action.

The NLC had met with the Federal Government last week but the meeting ended in deadlock as the two parties couldn’t reach an agreement.

NLC had also embarked on a two-day warning strike on September 5 in protest of what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to solve the difficulties caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.
