Lagos Declares May 16 as Boy Child Day, Moves to Strengthen Child Protection
The Lagos State Government has declared May 16 as Lagos Boy Child Day, reinforcing its commitment to promoting the welfare, protection and holistic development of every child in the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the development during the Lagos State Stakeholders’ Engagement on the review of the Child’s Rights Law, describing it as another milestone in the state’s efforts to ensure that no child is left behind.
The Governor said the initiative builds on the Lagos Boy Child Initiative, launched by the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, to provide boys with the guidance, mentorship and support needed to become responsible and productive members of society.
According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, the vision behind the initiative is rooted in the belief that boys deserve the same level of care, protection and opportunities as girls, adding that its growth into a state-backed programme reflects Lagos State’s commitment to inclusive child development.
He noted that the review of the Child’s Rights Law and the establishment of Lagos Boy Child Day demonstrate the government’s determination to strengthen policies that safeguard children’s rights while creating an enabling environment for them to thrive.
The Governor reaffirmed that the Lagos State Government will continue to implement programmes and policies that promote child protection, education, empowerment and equal opportunities, ensuring every child has the support needed to realise their full potential.
