Lagos: Suspected Car Thief’s Escape Ends in Swamp After Alleged Toyota Tundra Theft, Deadly Chase
A suspected vehicle thief has been apprehended in Lagos after allegedly stealing a Toyota Tundra during a test drive and causing multiple crashes while attempting to escape.
The incident reportedly began at the VGC car lot, New Holland Auto Group, where the suspect allegedly posed as a prospective buyer and was handed the vehicle keys for a test drive before driving away without authorisation.
According to reports, the suspect allegedly damaged security equipment while escaping through Victoria Garden City (VGC) and struck a security guard before heading towards the Chevron area.
He reportedly rammed into several vehicles along the route, with reports indicating that four dispatch riders were fatally hit during the incident. Other road users were also said to have been affected.
The vehicle seller reportedly pursued the suspect on a motorcycle, while motorists whose vehicles were allegedly hit joined the chase. The pursuit continued through the Chevron and VGC areas before traffic congestion around Agungi slowed the suspect down.
The suspect subsequently attempted to escape through the Ajiran area but reportedly lost control of the damaged truck and ended up in a waterlogged swamp, where he was apprehended.
Videos circulating online reportedly show members of the public helping to pull the suspect from the vehicle before assaulting him.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the reported fatalities and injuries, require confirmation from the relevant authorities. The suspect’s alleged actions also remain subject to investigation.
