“Lead with Integrity or Face the Consequences,” I-G Disu Tells Newly Promoted Police Brass

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has issued a stern warning to Nigeria’s newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs), urging them to uphold discipline, integrity, and accountability at all times.

Speaking on Monday at the decoration ceremony in Abuja, Disu made it clear that their new ranks come with immense responsibility.

”From this moment, you are no longer just senior officers; you are strategic leaders of the Nigeria Police Force.
You are expected to lead from the front. Your actions, decisions, and personal conduct must reflect discipline, integrity, and absolute respect for the rule of law.
You must ensure zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or dereliction of duty under your commands,” he said.

The I-G stressed that leadership in the Force requires hands-on supervision and accountability.

”You must know what is happening within your commands at all times. Lax supervision breeds misconduct; strong leadership enforces standards.

I will hold you accountable for both operational outcomes and the behaviour of officers under your authority,” Disu warned.

Highlighting his vision for modern policing, Disu emphasised the need for a people-oriented approach, professionalism, and respect for human rights.

”We must build trust deliberately and consistently. Intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and effective law enforcement are all strengthened when the public have confidence in us.
You must also drive reforms within your areas of responsibility, embrace innovation, strengthen operational efficiency, and eliminate outdated practices that do not align with modern policing standards,” he added.

The I-G described the promotions as the result of a merit-based process designed to reinforce competence and integrity.

”The officers earned the advancement through years of service and demonstrated ability. This promotion is not a reward, but a responsibility,” Disu noted.

As the new senior officers take up their roles, the I-G’s message is unambiguous: leadership in the Nigeria Police Force demands visible, accountable, and ethical conduct, with no tolerance for lapses that could undermine public trust.
