Leadership Cannot Be Wished Into Existence

Why the Pius Anyim Mentorship Programme Comes at the Right Time

Leadership Cannot Be Wished Into Existence

By Jerry Adesewo, Abuja.

Nigeria is not suffering from a shortage of talented people. Every year, our universities produce thousands of graduates with impressive academic records. Young entrepreneurs continue to build innovative businesses despite harsh economic realities. Across communities, there are young Nigerians demonstrating resilience, creativity, and courage.

Yet, one question continues to haunt the nation: where are the leaders?

The answer may not be that Nigeria lacks leaders. Rather, we have paid too little attention to deliberately preparing people for leadership before placing them in positions of authority.

Too often, leadership in Nigeria has been treated as an accident of politics, family influence, wealth, ethnicity, or opportunity. We assume that because someone excels professionally, they will naturally become an effective leader. Experience has repeatedly shown otherwise.

Leadership requires judgement. It demands integrity, emotional intelligence, institutional understanding, ethical discipline, and the ability to make difficult decisions in the public interest. These qualities are cultivated through intentional learning, mentorship, and practical exposure—not merely through ambition.

This is the leadership gap that has contributed to many of Nigeria’s governance challenges across politics, business, academia, and public institutions.

It is against this backdrop that the Pius Anyim Mentorship Programme (PAM-P) deserves national attention as yet another of a handful of leadership mentorship programmes growing in Nigeria.

Founded by former President of the Senate and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, the programme is built on a simple but profound philosophy: leaders should be prepared before opportunity arrives. Drawing from more than three decades of experience at the highest levels of national service, Senator Anyim argues that talent alone is insufficient; leadership must be deliberately developed.

Unlike many short-term seminars and motivational conferences, PAM-P is structured as a leadership fellowship with a formal curriculum, mentorship, and long-term support. The fellowship combines an eight-week Online Leadership Academy, a Residential Leadership Immersion in Abuja, and post-cohort mentorship that continues beyond the formal programme.

Participants will engage with subjects including ethical leadership, strategic thinking, governance, nation-building, entrepreneurship, negotiation, professional excellence, and institutional leadership before proceeding into specialised pathways in entrepreneurship, public and private sector leadership, or academia.

Perhaps one of the programme’s strongest features is its commitment to merit. Selection is competitive and places greater emphasis on leadership potential, ethical orientation, and commitment to service than on privileged backgrounds or polished credentials. This approach gives deserving young Nigerians from every part of the country an opportunity to compete on the strength of character and demonstrated leadership.

Even more commendable is the programme’s accessibility. There is no application fee and no programme fee. Successful Fellows will have their transportation to Abuja, accommodation, feeding, learning materials and residential logistics fully funded.

At a time when many leadership programmes have become prohibitively expensive, this initiative removes financial barriers for deserving applicants.

Nigeria’s future will not be transformed merely by changing governments. Sustainable national renewal requires a continuous pipeline of ethical, competent and prepared leaders who understand institutions and are committed to service above self.

Mentorship remains one of the most effective ways to transfer wisdom across generations. Programmes such as PAM-P help bridge the gap between youthful potential and responsible leadership.

Young Nigerians who desire to make meaningful contributions to the nation—whether in business, government, academia or community development—should take advantage of this opportunity.

The Pius Anyim Mentorship Programme is open to a broad spectrum of young Nigerians who have demonstrated the potential to lead and the willingness to grow. Recent graduates, including those currently serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), are encouraged to apply, alongside early-career professionals within their first five years after service. The fellowship also welcomes entrepreneurs building businesses, individuals pursuing careers in public service, private sector leadership or academia, as well as young people who have shown leadership in their workplaces, communities, civic organisations or other institutional settings.

Successful applicants will embark on a carefully designed leadership journey that begins with an eight-week Online Leadership Academy, progresses to an intensive Residential Leadership Immersion in Abuja, and continues with structured mentorship even after the formal programme ends. Fellows will also be guided along one of three specialised leadership pathways tailored to their aspirations, while enjoying the benefit of a fully funded fellowship that covers all programme-related expenses.

Applications for the 2026 Cohort are now open and will close on 20 July 2026. Interested candidates are expected to complete the online application form and submit a brief curriculum vitae, a Statement of Purpose, and two references. Shortlisted applicants will proceed to the interview stage before the final selection of Fellows.

Nigeria’s future will not be shaped by chance or by hope alone. It will be built by men and women who have been intentionally prepared for the responsibilities of leadership. For young Nigerians with a passion for serving and the courage to lead, the Pius Anyim Mentorship Programme offers an opportunity to begin that journey.
