Learn from Buratai: Security Expert Urges New COAS to Lead from the Front

By Auwal Ahmad Umar

In a call for proactive leadership in the Nigerian military, Dr. MS Abubakar, a renowned security expert, has advised the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to adopt a hands-on approach by engaging directly with troops on the battlefield.

Drawing lessons from the operational style of former COAS, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd.), Dr. Abubakar emphasised the need for visible leadership in addressing the ongoing security challenges in the country.

Speaking with Ournigeria over the weekend in Abuja, Dr. Abubakar praised Buratai’s legacy of leading from the front, noting that his presence in conflict zones not only boosted troop morale but also inspired confidence among Nigerians in the military’s capacity to combat insurgency and other threats.

“The new COAS must learn from the successes and strategies of his predecessors, particularly Buratai’s approach of being physically present in the theatre of operations,” Abubakar stated.

“Such leadership fosters unity, motivates the soldiers, and enhances operational effectiveness.”

Dr. Abubakar also urged the COAS to prioritise the welfare and training of personnel, ensuring they are well-equipped to counter evolving threats.

He highlighted the importance of fostering trust and communication within the ranks, stressing that a leader who engages with his troops can better understand their challenges and needs.

The security expert reaffirmed his confidence in the new leadership, urging Nigerians to support the military’s efforts in safeguarding national security.

The call for active engagement by the new COAS resonates with ongoing efforts to reinvigorate the fight against insurgency and restore peace across Nigeria.

As the nation anticipates a fresh approach, the leadership of the Nigerian Army will be critical in shaping the security landscape in the coming years.
