Lesotho Explores New Economic Opportunities with Afreximbank Support
Maseru, Lesotho — Africa’s economic landscape is evolving, and the Kingdom of Lesotho is positioning itself to capitalise on emerging opportunities in trade, industry, and regional integration.
From 11 to 14 November, a high-level delegation from the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), led by Mr. Humphrey N. Nwugo, Regional Director for Southern Africa, conducted an official mission to Maseru. The team engaged government leaders and private-sector stakeholders to highlight Afreximbank’s mandate and explore strategic opportunities for Lesotho.
The delegation included Dr. Anthony Coleman, Director of Development Research; Ms. Jacqueline Clarisse Motsebo, Head of the Board Secretariat; Dr. Chipego Muchanga Mudenda, Client Relations; and Ms. Abigail Heather Panganai, Senior Analyst, Client Relations. They met with senior officials across key ministries, including finance, natural resources, trade, agriculture, works, foreign affairs, and monetary policy, as well as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Lesotho.

Discussions focused on diversifying Lesotho’s export base and strengthening access to regional and global markets. Key sectors identified for growth included textiles and garments, renewable energy, water resources, and tourism. Officials and stakeholders emphasised that with proper policy alignment and strategic partnerships, these sectors could become major drivers of sustainable economic growth.
Afreximbank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Lesotho’s National Strategic Development Plan II (NSDP II), offering collaboration in financing, capacity building, and market-expansion initiatives to accelerate the country’s development trajectory.
