Military Warns of Heightened Suicide Bombing Threat in North-East as Ramadan Ends
By Matthew Eloyi
Residents of Nigeria’s North-East have been placed on high alert following a security advisory warning of a potential increase in suicide bombing attacks during the final days of Ramadan.
The alert was issued by the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, amid renewed concerns over activities of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the military said recent developments point to an elevated threat level, particularly in crowded public areas. The warning follows Monday evening’s attacks in Maiduguri, where explosions near Monday Market, the Post Office, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital resulted in casualties.
According to the statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the attacks underscore the continued intent of террорист groups to target densely populated civilian locations to instill fear and gain propaganda advantage.
The military noted that such groups often escalate operations during significant religious periods, especially around the 27th and 29th days of Ramadan, when increased human traffic is recorded in mosques, markets, motor parks, and other public spaces.
Residents across the region were urged to remain vigilant and security-conscious, particularly in crowded environments such as places of worship, shopping centres, transport hubs, hospitals, and major road intersections.
Worshippers attending night prayers, including Taraweeh and Tahajjud, were advised to cooperate with security personnel, especially during screening and access control procedures.
The advisory also called on the public to report suspicious movements, unattended items, or unusual behaviour promptly to security agencies. Citizens were encouraged to avoid overcrowded areas where possible and to fully comply with stop-and-search operations.
Parents and guardians were specifically urged to monitor the movement of their children, particularly during evening hours, while community leaders, religious authorities, and transport unions were asked to support sensitisation efforts and report potential threats.
The military assured residents that security forces have intensified surveillance, patrols, and protective measures across the North-East to prevent further attacks and ensure peaceful observance of Ramadan and the upcoming Eid celebrations.
“The Theatre Headquarters reassures all residents that security forces remain fully committed to protecting lives and property,” the statement said, urging citizens to remain calm but vigilant.
Authorities reiterated the importance of public cooperation, noting that timely information from residents has played a crucial role in foiling past attacks.
“If you see something, say something. Security is everyone’s responsibility,” the statement added.
