Musa Builds Clay Fridge That Keeps Food Fresh Without Electricity
In a part of Nigeria where electricity supply is unreliable or completely absent, a young boy named Musa has demonstrated how local knowledge and creativity can solve everyday problems. Using nothing more than clay, sand, and water, Musa constructed a functional refrigerator capable of preserving food for days without electricity.

The locally made device operates on the principle of evaporative cooling. Musa designed two clay pots, one placed inside the other, with the space between them filled with moist sand. The top is covered with a damp cloth. As water in the sand slowly evaporates, it draws heat away from the inner chamber, reducing the temperature inside and keeping stored items cool.
Often referred to as a “pot-in-pot fridge” or zeer cooler, Musa’s version features improved sealing and a small drainage groove to manage excess moisture during periods of high humidity. These refinements make the cooling system more effective and durable in harsh weather conditions.
Inside the clay fridge, Musa stores tomatoes, leafy vegetables, and even milk—food items that would typically spoil within hours in extreme heat. His innovation has drawn attention from teachers, local farmers, and traders, many of whom have begun adopting the design for household and market use.
Beyond its simplicity, the clay fridge offers a low-cost and sustainable solution to food preservation, helping families reduce waste and extend the shelf life of their produce. Musa’s invention stands as a powerful example of grassroots innovation, showing that meaningful solutions can emerge from curiosity, traditional knowledge, and the natural resources found within local communities.
