The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has called on members of the 2024 Hajj Media Team to prioritize accuracy and objectivity in their reportage during the Hajj operation.
The Executive Chairman of NAHCON, Malam Jalal Arabi, made this call while inaugurating the National Media Team in Abuja on Thursday. Arabi emphasized the crucial role of the media in shaping public perception and urged the team to uphold high ethical standards.
“You are in a position that can make or mar a community. The concern is to ensure that you do what is right to the best of your ability and conscience,” Arabi said, highlighting the impact of their reporting.
He also encouraged the media team to be active participants in the pilgrimage, not just as reporters but as guides and helpers to other pilgrims.
Prof. Abubakar Yagawal, the Commissioner of Planning Research, Statistics, Information, and Library Services, emphasized the importance of protecting Nigeria’s interest and projecting NAHCON’s image positively.
Yagawal also reminded the media team of the principle of information dissemination set by Prophet Muhammad, stating, “Whoever believes in Allah and the last day should either say what is good or keep quiet.”
Mr Anofi Elegushi, the NAHCON Commissioner of Operations, highlighted the media’s crucial role in Hajj operations, emphasizing the need for accurate reporting back to Nigeria.
In response, Mousa Ubandawaki, the Chairman of the media team and Deputy Director of the Information and Publications Division at NAHCON assured their commitment to serving the interest of pilgrims and the country.
The commission reiterated its openness to constructive criticisms and guidance, underscoring the importance of responsible journalism in covering the Hajj operations.
