NASENI Empowers Women in Kano with Solar Skills to Expand Clean Energy Access
The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is empowering women in Kano State with technical skills in solar energy installation, maintenance and repairs under its NASENI Sustainable Empowerment Programme (NSEP).
The initiative, implemented across Kumbotso and Tarauni Local Government Areas, is designed to equip women with practical skills that can provide sustainable livelihoods while expanding access to clean and reliable energy within their communities.
According to NASENI Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Khalil Halilu, the programme also addresses a practical challenge faced by some households that may be uncomfortable allowing male technicians into their homes for technical support.
He explained that training women as solar technicians would not only create economic opportunities for them but also make technical services more accessible and acceptable to households that prefer female technicians.
Dr. Halilu emphasised that technology delivers its greatest impact when it responds directly to the needs and realities of communities.
Through NSEP, the trained women are expected to deploy their newly acquired skills to support solar energy systems, carry out maintenance and repairs, and develop income-generating opportunities while contributing to the expansion of clean energy solutions across Kano State.
The initiative reflects NASENI’s broader commitment to using science, technology and innovation to promote inclusive economic empowerment, strengthen local technical capacity and improve the quality of life of Nigerians.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to creating opportunities that enable more women and young people to participate meaningfully in Nigeria’s growing technology and renewable energy sectors.
