The collapse, which occurred on Wednesday, led to a sharp drop in electricity generation to about 24 megawatts, far below the level required to sustain power supply nationwide. As a result, homes, businesses, and critical services across several states were thrown into blackout.

While details surrounding the immediate cause of the grid failure were yet to be officially disclosed at the time of filing this report, the incident adds to a long list of recurring grid collapses that have continued to challenge Nigeria’s power sector.

Power sector stakeholders and electricity consumers have repeatedly expressed concern over the fragility of the national grid, calling for urgent reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and improved system management to ensure stable and reliable electricity supply.

Authorities are expected to commence restoration efforts and provide further updates on the situation as investigations continue.
