The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has begun a strategic repositioning of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s push toward a $1 trillion digital economy.

As part of the restructuring, the NCC announced the appointment of Princess Oforitsenere Emiko as Interim Chairman of DBI’s governing board, with a mandate to align the institute with emerging global technology trends and national development priorities.

Established in 2005 as a telecoms and ICT training centre, DBI has since trained more than 250,000 Nigerians across over 100 industry-recognised courses. The institute is now expected to take on a broader role in developing digital talent and supporting innovation across the country.

According to the NCC, the renewed focus will centre on five key pillars: education and training, research and development, innovation, economic growth, and policy support.

The initiative comes amid Nigeria’s broader digital infrastructure ambitions, including plans to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables across all 774 local government areas, aimed at expanding broadband access and improving connectivity nationwide.

With an estimated 70 percent of Nigeria’s population under the age of 30, officials say the repositioning of DBI is critical to equipping young people with future-ready digital skills and improving their access to opportunities in the global tech ecosystem.

The NCC added that the reform is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s workforce capacity, support innovation-driven enterprises, and accelerate the country’s transition into a digitally powered economy.
