In a display of civic pride and environmental responsibility, the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) kicked off its 60th anniversary celebrations with a unique twist – a massive cleanup operation in the heart of Kaduna metropolis.

Led by Commandant Major General JO Ochai, hundreds of officers, cadets, staff, and even youth corps members descended upon Ahmadu Bello Way, armed not with weapons, but with brooms, shovels, and bags, determined to leave their mark on the city.

The sanitation exercise, stretching from Leventis Roundabout to Katsina Road Roundabout, wasn’t just about picking up trash. It was a symbolic gesture of the NDA’s deep appreciation for its host state and a powerful message to the community: cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility.

“We are not just soldiers in training,” declared Major General Ochai, thanking the Kaduna State government for their partnership. “We are also members of this community, and we have a role to play in keeping it healthy and vibrant.”

His words resonated with residents and officials alike. Dr. Umar Hairau, representing the Kaduna Capital Territory Authority, hailed the initiative as “unprecedented” and praised the NDA for setting an example for all citizens.

The cadets, future officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces, absorbed the message, understanding that leadership extends beyond the battlefield and into the heart of their communities.

“This sanitation drive is just the beginning of the NDA’s month-long anniversary celebration. From special religious services to sporting events and historical commemorations, the academy is poised to showcase its rich legacy and commitment to Nigeria’s future.

But for many in Kaduna, the sight of military personnel trading fatigues for cleaning gloves will remain a lasting impression, a testament to the NDA’s belief that true strength lies not just in defending the nation, but also in serving it.

So, the next time you see someone in uniform picking up trash, remember, it might just be an NDA cadet, celebrating their 60th anniversary by making a difference, one sweep at a time.
