NDLEA Begins Induction of AK-47 Rifles, Advanced Pistols to Strengthen Operations
In a major shift aimed at enhancing its tactical capabilities against increasingly violent drug trafficking networks, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has commenced the formal induction of AK-47 rifles and advanced pistols into its operational framework.
The move marks a significant milestone in the agency’s 36-year history as it seeks to strengthen the safety and effectiveness of its personnel during high-risk anti-narcotics operations.
As part of the initiative, the NDLEA has launched a specialised Train-the-Trainer Course on Weapon Handling at the NDLEA Academy in Jos, Plateau State. The programme is designed to equip selected officers with advanced firearms handling skills, who will, in turn, train other operatives across the country.
According to the agency, the decision was informed by the evolving nature of the fight against drug trafficking, with criminal networks becoming increasingly armed and violent.
The firearms acquisition process, which began in 2023, has now entered its final phase, with thousands of procured weapons and ammunition expected to be delivered soon.
The NDLEA also disclosed that a comprehensive distribution and accountability framework has already been approved to ensure the proper deployment, tracking and responsible use of the weapons.
The agency described the development as a landmark achievement that will significantly enhance its operational readiness and capacity to combat organised drug trafficking and other related crimes while ensuring greater protection for its personnel during enforcement operations.
