The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has expressed its readiness to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with its Egyptian counterpart to strengthen intelligence sharing, joint operations and capacity building in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), made this known on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, while receiving the Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohammed Fouad, during a courtesy visit to the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Marwa stressed that the growing global drug threat requires stronger international cooperation, noting that partnerships between law enforcement agencies are critical to dismantling transnational drug trafficking networks.

He cited the recent dismantling of two methamphetamine laboratories in Nigeria allegedly operated by Mexican nationals, with illicit drugs and related materials valued at more than 362 million dollars, as evidence of the increasing sophistication of international drug syndicates.

According to him, enhanced collaboration with Egypt would improve intelligence exchange, strengthen joint operations and expand training opportunities for officers of both countries.

In his remarks, Ambassador Mohammed Fouad underscored the importance of closer cooperation between Nigeria and Egypt, describing both countries as key players in Africa’s fight against narcotics.

He said Nigeria and Egypt have a shared responsibility to lead a coordinated continental response against drug trafficking and substance abuse, adding that stronger bilateral collaboration would contribute significantly to regional security and stability.

The proposed Memorandum of Understanding is expected to provide a framework for sustained cooperation in intelligence sharing, operational coordination, training and other strategic initiatives aimed at combating illicit drug trafficking and organised crime.
