The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of communities affected by a devastating windstorm in Gashua and surrounding areas of Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State, with a view to determining the extent of the destruction and identifying urgent humanitarian needs.

The assessment team was led by the NEDC State Coordinator, Professor Ali Ibrahim Abbas, alongside the Executive Chairman of Bade Local Government Area, Alhaji Ibrahim Babagana.

The team inspected the affected communities to evaluate the level of damage and identify priority areas requiring immediate intervention.

Preliminary findings revealed that the windstorm affected more than 2,000 households, while four persons lost their lives in the disaster.

The storm also destroyed several homes, schools, boreholes, shops and other critical public infrastructure across the affected communities.

Speaking during the assessment, Professor Abbas, on behalf of the Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali, expressed sympathy to families who lost loved ones and property, assuring them of the Commission’s commitment to providing immediate relief and support.

He said the Commission remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to alleviate the suffering of victims and support the recovery of affected communities.

The NEDC also disclosed that Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, is in close contact with the Commission’s management to facilitate the mobilisation of resources and humanitarian assistance for those affected.

The Commission commended the efforts of the Bade Local Government Council, the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Local Emergency Management Committee, NEDC volunteers and other stakeholders for their prompt response and coordination during the assessment exercise.

The NEDC assured residents that necessary intervention measures are already being put in place to cushion the impact of the disaster and assist affected households in rebuilding their lives.
