NEMA Leads Multi-Agency Rescue Operation After Building Collapse in Anambra
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has coordinated a multi-agency emergency response following the collapse of a building in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, as rescue teams continue efforts to save trapped victims.
The incident, which reportedly involved buildings occupied mainly by students of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, prompted the immediate deployment of NEMA’s Enugu Operations Office to coordinate search and rescue operations.
Working alongside the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigeria Police Force, the Anambra State Fire Service, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and construction companies, NEMA has mobilised personnel and equipment to the scene to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble and manage the emergency.
As of 12:43 p.m., rescue officials confirmed the recovery of one female victim who was found dead beneath the collapsed structure, while intensive search and rescue efforts continued to locate and evacuate other possible occupants.
The Head of NEMA’s Enugu Operations Office, Mrs. Priscilla Madukwe, appealed to residents, members of the media, and bystanders to remain calm and avoid actions that could hinder the ongoing rescue operation.
She assured the public that all responding agencies are working round the clock and deploying every available resource to rescue affected persons, safeguard lives, and ensure effective emergency response at the scene.
Madukwe added that NEMA would continue to provide updates as rescue operations progress, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to coordinating an effective response and supporting all affected persons during the emergency.
