NEMA Strengthens Inter-Agency Collaboration Ahead of Early Warnings for All Initiative
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified inter-agency collaboration ahead of the official launch of Nigeria’s Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Initiative, as key government agencies move to strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness and early warning systems.
The Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, hosted the heads of critical agencies at the NEMA headquarters for a high-level strategic meeting focused on strengthening coordination and improving Nigeria’s capacity to anticipate and respond to disasters.
The meeting brought together the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike; Director-General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Mohammed; Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida; and Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju.
Mrs. Umar said the meeting underscored the collective commitment of the participating institutions to building a stronger and more coordinated disaster risk management architecture for Nigeria.
She explained that effective collaboration among agencies responsible for weather forecasting, hydrological monitoring, telecommunications, space technology and emergency management is essential to ensuring that early warnings reach vulnerable communities in a timely and accessible manner.
According to her, the initiative aligns with the national security and development priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly efforts to protect lives, strengthen resilience and safeguard communities against the impacts of natural and human-induced hazards.
Through the Early Warnings for All Initiative, Nigeria seeks to strengthen the systems used to detect, monitor and communicate potential hazards, enabling communities, institutions and emergency responders to take timely action before disasters occur.
Mrs. Umar stressed that the ultimate objective is to develop an early warning system capable of reaching every person and leaving no one behind, particularly communities most vulnerable to floods, extreme weather events and other hazards.
She expressed confidence that sustained cooperation among the agencies would help Nigeria build a more resilient and responsive disaster management system.
“Through EW4All, we will build a stronger, more coordinated national early warning system that reaches every person, leaves no one behind, and ultimately saves lives,” she said.
The strategic engagement marks another step towards the official launch of the EW4All Initiative and reinforces NEMA’s commitment to strengthening preparedness, prevention and coordinated emergency response across Nigeria.
