NEMA, UNOOSA Strengthen Collaboration on Space Technology for Disaster Management

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging space-based technology to strengthen disaster risk management and emergency response across Nigeria.

The Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, stated this while receiving a delegation from the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), led by Mr. Jumpei Takami, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Umar expressed optimism over the progress of the UNOOSA Digital Twin Project, which is currently being piloted in Lagos State, describing the initiative as a significant development in the use of technology to improve disaster preparedness and response.

She noted that, when fully completed and operational, the infrastructure would complement NEMA’s efforts by providing critical data to support timely forecasting, real-time monitoring of disaster-prone areas and effective emergency planning.

According to her, the technology will also assist in identifying safer evacuation routes and strengthening resilience in communities vulnerable to disasters.

The NEMA Director-General welcomed the collaboration with UNOOSA, stressing the importance of innovation and advanced technology in building a more responsive and resilient disaster management system for Nigeria.

The engagement underscores NEMA’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and adopting modern tools to protect lives, safeguard communities and improve Nigeria’s capacity to anticipate and respond effectively to disasters.
