Neuralink Targets Human Trials for Experimental Blindsight Vision Implant
Neuralink, the brain-computer interface company founded by Elon Musk, says it hopes to begin human clinical trials of its experimental Blindsight vision implant within the next six to 12 months, marking a significant step in the development of technology aimed at restoring a degree of vision to people who are blind.
According to the company, the Blindsight device is designed to bypass damaged eyes and optic nerves by directly stimulating the brain’s visual cortex. The technology is intended for people who have lost their sight due to damage to the eyes or optic nerve, provided the visual cortex remains functional.
Neuralink says the initial version of the implant is expected to provide only low-resolution, experimental vision. However, the company believes future advancements could significantly improve the quality of vision as the technology evolves.
While Elon Musk has expressed optimism about the long-term potential of the technology, experts note that Blindsight remains in the experimental stage and must undergo rigorous clinical trials to establish its safety and effectiveness before it can become widely available.
