NFVCB Urges Creative Industry to Prioritize Life Emergency Insurance
By Jerry Adesewo
Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has advocated for practitioners in the creative industry to invest in life emergency insurance. This advice was given during the ongoing third Nigeria Digital Content Regulation Conference (NDCRC) in Lagos.
Expressing concern about situations where industry members face financial challenges, especially during health crises, Thomas emphasized the importance of being insured to handle unforeseen emergencies. He urged practitioners to include insurance as part of their production costs, extending the coverage even to roles like caterers working within the production.
“We should not at any time ignore insurance. It is for all of us in the creative industry,” he emphasized. Thomas highlighted the need for self-regulation among stakeholders and suggested that the industry should not solely rely on government regulations for day-to-day life.

Thomas also mentioned the ongoing renovation of the National Theatre, expressing concern that the focus is more on cinema than theatre, and urged a reversal of this trend to preserve the cultural and performance atmosphere of the space.
The NFVCB CEO emphasized the importance of self-regulation, citing its success in South Africa and its potential acceptance in Kenya. He stated that by disciplining themselves and adopting self-regulation, the industry could stimulate more investment opportunities.
The ongoing NDCRC is focusing on discussing the growth of the film industry and evaluating concerns around global standards for regulating digital content. Thomas highlighted that the conference aims to guide the crafting of policies that nurture creativity and collaboration without imposing undue restrictions.
In attendance at the conference were industry experts, policymakers, and entrepreneurs, coming together to deliberate on the future of Nigeria’s film industry and its role in the global digital landscape.
