Niger Government Unveils N100m Hospital Equipment to Strengthen Healthcare Services in Bida
The Niger State Government has unveiled hospital equipment, medical commodities and consumables worth N100 million at the Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital, Bida, as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to quality medical services across the state.
The intervention was made possible through collaborative efforts between the Federal Government and the Niger State Government, with the latest support expected to enhance the capacity of the hospital to respond effectively to the healthcare needs of residents.
Unveiling the items on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Murtala Bagana, described the intervention as an investment aimed at delivering tangible hope to mothers, newborns, families and communities across Niger State.
He said the provision of the equipment represents a significant commitment by the Bago administration to strengthening public health facilities and ensuring they are adequately equipped to provide effective and timely services.
According to the governor, the Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital, Bida, is among 22 general hospitals across the state earmarked for renovation. Other facilities include general hospitals in Kontagora, New Bussa and Sabon Wuse.
Governor Bago also disclosed that the state is expanding Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) services through critical upgrades at the Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre, Bida.
He said the intervention is part of the government’s broader commitment to reducing and ultimately eliminating preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
The upgraded facilities are expected to serve as critical healthcare centres for residents across Bida, Agaie, Katcha, Gbako, Edati, Lavun and neighbouring local government areas and states.
Dr. Bagana said the interventions would directly improve healthcare services for a combined catchment population of nearly two million people, including approximately 400,000 women of childbearing age.
He added that the expansion of capacity at FMC Bida and General Hospital Bida would help encourage safe institutional deliveries while reducing dangerous delays in referrals and access to emergency care.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to complementing Federal Government interventions with sustained state-level investments in healthcare governance, human resources, facility maintenance and reliable availability of essential medical commodities.
He said Niger State was positioning itself as a proactive partner in strengthening Nigeria’s health system, stressing that specialised equipment and properly equipped public health facilities remain essential to delivering quality healthcare.
Etsu Nupe Commends Intervention
The Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, commended the state government for its achievements in the health sector.
He said the provision of additional equipment and consumables to the Bida General Hospital would significantly improve healthcare services for residents of Bida and surrounding communities.
The traditional ruler urged the hospital management to ensure effective utilisation and proper maintenance of the equipment.
He also appealed to residents, particularly pregnant women, to prioritise regular medical check-ups and make use of government healthcare facilities for safe deliveries.
The Permanent Secretary, Niger State Ministry of Health, Dr. Abdullahi Usman Imam, Head of Hospital Services at Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital, Dr. Mohammed Imam, Chairman of Bida Local Government Council, Muhammad Manko Usman, and other development partners also commended Governor Bago and the Federal Ministry of Health for their commitment to improving healthcare delivery.
The latest intervention reinforces the Niger State Government’s strategy of combining Federal Government support with state-level investments, improved coordination, human-resource development, medical commodity security and stronger health-system governance to build a more resilient healthcare system for its people.
