The Federal Government has signed a landmark aviation partnership with Airbus aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s aviation sector through fleet expansion, infrastructure development, and human capital growth.

The agreement was signed in Toulouse by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who led a high-level delegation to the aircraft manufacturer’s headquarters at the company’s invitation.

Describing the development as a strategic step forward, Keyamo said the Working Together Agreement reflects Nigeria’s commitment to positioning itself as a leading hub for regional and continental air travel.

A key component of the agreement focuses on fleet expansion, building on the successful deployment of the Airbus A220 in Nigeria’s aviation space, particularly by Ibom Air. The initiative is expected to enhance connectivity and improve operational efficiency across domestic and international routes.

Under the partnership, Airbus will also provide technical consulting services for the development of Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, as well as support for flight operations and aviation market intelligence.

The agreement further prioritises human capital development, with plans to create employment opportunities through specialised training programmes for Nigerian pilots, engineers, and cabin crew, aimed at building a globally competitive workforce.

In addition, Nigeria is seeking to position itself to benefit from Airbus’ long-term projections for the continent. According to the company’s Global Market Forecast, Africa is expected to require about 1,490 new aircraft over the next 20 years, presenting significant growth opportunities for the country’s aviation sector.

The visit also included commitments to deepen technical collaboration, with plans for further engagements and inspections of Airbus’ Defence & Space and Helicopter divisions.

The Nigerian delegation comprised members of the Airline Operators of Nigeria and other key stakeholders in the aviation industry, all of whom participated in the visit at their own expense.

Industry observers say the partnership could play a critical role in modernising Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem, improving service delivery, and strengthening its position as a gateway between Africa and the rest of the world.
