Nigeria Deepens Defence Ties with Russia as CDS Musa Visits Moscow on Victory Day
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has paid a strategic courtesy visit to the Russian Federation’s Minister of Defence, Mr. Andrey Belousov, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral military relations between the two nations.

The visit, which took place on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Moscow, coincided with Russia’s 80th Victory Day Anniversary, marking the country’s historic triumph in World War II.
General Musa’s presence underscored Nigeria’s solidarity with the Russian people in honouring their fallen heroes.
During the high-level engagement, General Musa reiterated Nigeria’s interest in expanding military collaboration with Russia, particularly in areas critical to the operational efficiency of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
He highlighted key areas of need, signalling Nigeria’s willingness to deepen cooperation in defence technology and capacity building.
In response, Minister Belousov expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s show of goodwill, affirming Russia’s readiness to enhance military-technical support to Nigeria. He stated that ongoing and future engagements, including deliberations within the Intergovernmental Working Group, would further define collaborative frameworks between both countries’ defence establishments.
The meeting is seen as a pivotal step toward reinforcing military partnerships and leveraging Russia’s defence capabilities to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
