Nigeria, FAO Convene First National One Health Workshop to Strengthen Pandemic Preparedness
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria, has convened the country’s first National One Health Workshop aimed at strengthening coordinated responses to health risks affecting humans, animals, and the environment.

The multi-sectoral initiative is being led by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.
The workshop brings together key stakeholders to review Nigeria’s current One Health situation analysis, identify national priorities, and develop a strategic roadmap for the National One Health Strategic Plan 2.0. This includes frameworks for planning, costing, and mobilising investment.
Officials say the process is critical to positioning Nigeria for sustainable financing opportunities, including access to the Pandemic Fund, while strengthening preparedness, prevention, and response mechanisms for future health threats.
The initiative underscores the importance of collaboration across sectors, with experts emphasising that a unified, evidence-based approach is essential for tackling emerging and re-emerging diseases.
Stakeholders at the workshop called for stronger alignment among institutions, credible data-driven planning, and sustained investment, noting that building resilient One Health systems is key to preventing future pandemics and safeguarding public health.
