Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to UN Charter, Signs UN80 Reform Agenda
Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism, global peace, and international cooperation by signing a recommitment to the United Nations Charter and the UN80 Reform Agenda ahead of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The recommitment was signed on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim.
Speaking after the signing, Ambassador Ibrahim said Nigeria remains firmly committed to the principles and objectives of the United Nations, emphasizing the country’s dedication to promoting global peace, sustainable development, and international cooperation.
According to him, Nigeria’s endorsement of the UN80 Reform Agenda reflects its confidence in the future of the United Nations and the importance of strengthening multilateral institutions to address emerging global challenges.
Ambassador Ibrahim, who currently chairs the United Nations Budget, Appropriations and Administration Committee, noted that the move demonstrates Nigeria’s continued support for efforts aimed at enhancing the effectiveness, transparency, and responsiveness of the global body.
In a related development, the Nigerian envoy received the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, at the Nigeria Mission House, where discussions focused on Nigeria’s strategic priorities within the United Nations system.
During the engagement, Ambassador Ibrahim briefed the Deputy Secretary-General on Nigeria’s vision and objectives at the UN, while both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration in pursuit of shared goals.
The meeting also underscored the mission’s determination to work closely with the leadership of the United Nations in implementing a 90-day strategic agenda designed to enhance Nigeria’s influence and participation in global affairs.
The developments highlight Nigeria’s continued commitment to playing an active role in shaping international policy discussions and advancing peace, security, and sustainable development on the global stage.
