Nigeria Revenue Service Takes Over Mineral Royalty Collection Nationwide
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has officially assumed responsibility for the collection of mineral royalties from mining operators across the country following the implementation of new tax laws.

Under the new arrangement, the NRS will handle royalty collection, while the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development will continue to oversee the technical and regulatory aspects of the mining sector.
This development was finalised during a meeting in Abuja between the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, and the NRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, aimed at strengthening collaboration between both institutions.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, Dare Adekanmbi, the transition aligns with newly enacted tax laws empowering the Service to administer all federally collectable revenues. The change, which took effect from January 1, 2026, was formalised in a joint statement endorsed by both officials.
The statement noted that the reform follows the enactment of the tax laws by Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 26, 2025, marking a significant shift in revenue administration within the solid minerals sector.
Both agencies agreed to collaborate closely to ensure a seamless transition and effective implementation of the new framework. Plans are underway to launch a joint nationwide sensitisation programme to guide mining operators on royalty filing and payment procedures under the new regime.
The new system will also introduce a modern, end-to-end digital platform for royalty administration, alongside regular technical engagements to address operational challenges as they arise.
The NRS and the Ministry assured stakeholders of a transparent and orderly rollout process, urging operators to comply with the new requirements and actively participate in the sensitisation initiatives.
