Nigeria Strengthens Data Protection Expertise at GSMA Mobile Policy Week in Rwanda

Representatives of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Mr. Abubakar Mahmud from the IT and Cybersecurity Unit and Mr. Salim Ibrahim from the Innovation and Emerging Technologies Unit, participated in the GSMA Ministerial Programme and Mobile Policy Week held in Kigali, Rwanda.

During the capacity-building sessions on Mobile Privacy, Security, and AI Governance, the NDPC delegates gained insights into global best practices, including privacy-by-design principles, mobile network data security, and responsible artificial intelligence governance. These learnings are set to strengthen the Commission’s ability to enforce compliance in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding mobile and AI-driven sectors.

A notable highlight was the engagement with the Data Protection Office Rwanda (DPOR), where both sides explored opportunities for regional cooperation and knowledge exchange. The collaboration seeks to harmonise data protection standards across Africa, promote innovation, and build digital trust.

Additionally, the NDPC represented Nigeria at the Mobile World Congress, actively contributing to discussions on Africa’s digital future. Delegates engaged in high-level sessions on 5G deployment, AI integration, internet infrastructure, and regulatory modernization, placing Nigeria at the forefront of continental data protection and privacy initiatives.

These engagements underscore NDPC’s proactive role in shaping policies and frameworks that enhance digital safety, privacy, and trust across Africa.
