Nigeria Strengthens Food Security: Minister Kyari Unveils “Seeds for Renewed Hope” at NASC 50th Anniversary
At the 8th SeedConnect Africa Conference and the 50th anniversary of the National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC) in Abuja, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to building resilient food systems through quality seeds, expanded research adoption, and enhanced farmer support.
Highlighting key initiatives, Kyari pointed to the National Soil Health Programme and the new dry season phase of the National Agricultural Growth Scheme–Agro Pocket, which is boosting wheat production across 16 states. He also referenced rainfed wheat varieties from the Lake Chad Research Institute aimed at reducing import dependence.

The Minister officially unveiled the Seeds for Renewed Hope Programme, backed by the Presidential Catalytic Seed Fund, designed to modernize seed production, testing, and distribution nationwide. He urged stakeholders to expand access, increase yields, and secure Nigeria’s path toward food self-reliance.
