Nigeria has taken a major step toward strengthening knowledge-driven development with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for implementation between the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, UNESCO, and the International Media and Information Literacy Institute.

The agreement was formalised during the official launch of IMILI in Abuja, marking a historic milestone in efforts to promote media and information literacy across Nigeria and beyond.

The MoU was signed by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Mariya Gabriel; and the Director of the Institute, Sharon Omotosho.

The partnership underscores a renewed commitment to fostering collaboration among stakeholders, advancing digital and media literacy, and empowering citizens with the skills required to navigate the modern information landscape.

Officials noted that the initiative is expected to strengthen institutional capacity, support educational frameworks, and promote responsible information consumption, particularly in an era shaped by rapid technological advancement and the spread of misinformation.

The launch of IMILI and the signing of the MoU highlight Nigeria’s growing role in championing media literacy initiatives, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the collaboration will drive innovation, critical thinking, and inclusive access to information across communities.
