Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their long-standing strategic partnership, with renewed focus on trade, security, investment and regional stability.

The commitment was reaffirmed on Monday, July 13, 2026, when the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, received the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Mr. Frank Garcia, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Welcoming the U.S. delegation, Ambassador Enikanolaiye underscored the importance Nigeria places on its bilateral relations with the United States, expressing confidence that the visit would further deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to expanding collaboration in trade and investment, maritime security, counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and regional peace and security.

He highlighted the progress achieved through the Nigeria–United States Joint Working Group, noting that preparations are underway for the next bilateral engagement scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., in August 2026.

Ambassador Enikanolaiye also reiterated Nigeria’s resolve to tackle security challenges through strengthened law enforcement, effective prosecution of terrorism-related offences, enhanced protection of vulnerable communities, and sustained efforts to improve security in the Gulf of Guinea and the Lake Chad Basin.

On migration and consular matters, the minister emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to constructive dialogue with the United States, describing such engagements as vital to strengthening bilateral relations.

He further maintained that while Nigeria continues to confront security challenges, these should not be interpreted as a policy of religious persecution or genocide, stressing that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting all citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity.

According to him, the government will continue to uphold the rule of law while promoting peace, security and national unity.

The meeting formed part of ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at consolidating Nigeria–United States relations and advancing cooperation on shared regional and global priorities.
