A Nigerian national, identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service after security operatives foiled an alleged robbery attempt targeting three banks in the Labone area of Accra.

The Ghana Police Service said it received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2026, indicating that a gang of suspected armed robbers was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located in Labone.

Following the intelligence, police personnel were immediately deployed to the area, where they reportedly spotted members of the suspected gang in vehicles parked near the banks.

According to the police, one of the vehicles sped away after its occupants noticed the presence of security operatives. Officers pursued the vehicle and arrested Maazi, while another occupant reportedly escaped.

The occupants of a second vehicle also allegedly attempted to flee while firing at the police. The officers responded, resulting in a shootout during which two suspected robbers were killed.

The police said two vehicles were recovered from the scene: a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17. A pistol was also reportedly recovered.

Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery plot and identify other members of the suspected gang.

The bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.

The Ghana Police Service said investigations are ongoing as security authorities continue efforts to uncover the wider network behind the alleged operation.
