Nigerian Legion Denies Crisis, Threatens Legal Action Over Alleged N65m Fund Diversion Report

The Nigerian Legion has dismissed reports alleging an internal crisis and diversion of N65 million in Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) funds, describing the claims as misleading and exaggerated.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the Legion’s management reacted to online reports published by Eye Reporters and other social media platforms on May 13 and 14, 2026, titled “Crisis Rocks Nigerian Legion; COS, Directors Resign” and “Alleged N65m AFRD Fund Diversion Sparks Legion Crisis.”

The organisation said the departure of some officers was part of an ongoing restructuring process aimed at repositioning the Legion under a new strategic direction, and not evidence of any crisis.

According to the statement signed by the Director of Corporate Affairs, A.A. Soaga Adetoro, such administrative changes are common within military and paramilitary institutions whenever new leadership assumes office.

“The Nigerian Legion is undergoing a major transformation under the new management with focus on modernising veteran welfare, restructuring the Corps of Commissionaires and enhancing security roles under the leadership of the National Chairman, Ms Grace Morenike Henry,” the statement said.

The management also rejected allegations that N65 million meant for AFRD activities was missing, insisting that the reports failed to reflect the true financial situation of the organisation.

It explained that some donors had yet to redeem pledges made to the Legion, stressing that all funds currently in the organization’s custody were fully accounted for.

The Legion further urged media organisations to adhere to professional ethics by verifying information with appropriate authorities before publication.

It warned that the spread of unverified reports could erode public confidence and create unnecessary confusion.

The statement added that legal action might be taken against Eye Reporters and other publishers if what it described as attempts to tarnish the image of the Nigerian Legion continued.
