Troops of Nigerian Contingent 4 for the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei have successfully concluded a nine-week pre-deployment training at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre.

The contingent, comprising 18 officers and 168 soldiers, graduated during a ceremony held on April 8, 2026, at the Centre’s parade ground.

Representing the Chief of Operations (Army), Mayirenso Lander Saraso, the Director of Force Generation, Muhammed Kana, congratulated the troops and charged them to uphold professionalism, discipline, and Nigeria’s longstanding reputation in global peacekeeping missions.

He reiterated the United Nations zero-tolerance policy on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), urging the personnel to remain guided by the highest ethical standards while on deployment.

Earlier, the Commandant of MLAILPKC, Dagana Allu, described the graduation as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s contributions to international peace and security. He noted that the troops underwent rigorous and mission-specific training designed to prepare them for the complex operational environment in Abyei.

According to him, the Centre has trained over 100,000 peacekeepers since its establishment, many of whom have served with distinction in various UN and regional missions. He added that the training programme included medical screening, peacekeeping principles, rules of engagement, and strict adherence to international conduct standards.

Major General Allu expressed confidence that the troops would uphold Nigeria’s legacy of excellence and professionalism in peacekeeping operations. He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, for his continued support to the Centre.

In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies, Gabriel Esho, appreciated the leadership of the Centre and the dedication of the training team.

The graduating contingent is expected to be deployed to Abyei in support of ongoing international peacekeeping efforts under the United Nations mandate.
