Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined to 14.63 per cent in September 2026, down from 15.39 per cent in August, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The latest figure represents a decrease of 6.35 percentage points from the 20.98 per cent recorded in September 2025, indicating a slowdown in the annual rate of increase in consumer prices.

On a month-on-month basis, headline inflation fell to 0.06 per cent in September from 0.71 per cent in August, suggesting that average prices increased at a slower pace during the month.

The NBS data also showed a significant decline in rural inflation. The year-on-year rural inflation rate stood at 12.46 per cent in September 2026, while the month-on-month rate dropped to -0.89 per cent from 1.79 per cent in August.

The negative monthly rural inflation rate indicates that average prices in the rural areas declined during the month, although the annual inflation rate remained positive.

The corresponding 12-month average rural inflation rate stood at 15.32 per cent in September 2026, compared with 25.67 per cent reported in the corresponding period of the preceding year.

The NBS further reported that urban inflation declined by 12.58 percentage points from the 28.48 per cent recorded in September 2025.

The latest figures point to a broad slowdown in inflationary pressures across Nigeria, although the decline in the inflation rate does not necessarily mean that the general price level has returned to previous levels.
