The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.)  has renewed its partnership with TotalEnergies  to continue the deployment of the Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications (AUSEA) technology across its upstream operations for an additional 24 months.

The renewed agreement is aimed at strengthening efforts to detect, measure, and reduce methane and carbon emissions within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector as part of broader environmental sustainability and energy transition objectives.

Under the partnership, the AUSEA technology will continue to be deployed to monitor emissions from upstream facilities, providing accurate data that will support mitigation measures and improve environmental performance across operations.

NNPC Ltd. said the extension reflects its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving operational efficiency, and aligning with global best practices in environmental management.

The AUSEA system, developed to identify and quantify methane emissions with high precision, enables operators to detect emission sources quickly and implement corrective measures to reduce environmental impact.

The collaboration between NNPC Ltd. and TotalEnergies is expected to further enhance transparency in emissions monitoring while supporting Nigeria’s efforts to meet climate commitments and promote sustainable energy development.

Industry stakeholders have described the renewal of the agreement as a significant step toward strengthening environmental stewardship in the country’s petroleum sector and advancing initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of oil and gas operations.
