NSCDC Mining Marshals Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Mining Across Nigeria
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have intensified enforcement operations across mining sites nationwide to combat illegal mining, protect mineral resources and ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
The latest operation was carried out in Nasarawa State in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer and the state team responsible for mining regulation. The exercise focused on ensuring that mining operators comply with established laws, operational guidelines and safety requirements.
The sustained enforcement drive reflects the commitment of the NSCDC Commandant-General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to supporting the policy objectives of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, particularly in tackling illegal mining, preventing revenue leakages, promoting safe mining practices and strengthening investor confidence in the sector.
Speaking on the operations, the Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC Attah John Onoja, said enforcement activities would continue across the country without a predetermined sequence, stressing that all mining operators must conduct their activities within the law.
He emphasised that operators must obtain valid licences and meet all regulatory and operational requirements before commencing mining activities. He also highlighted the need for regular monitoring and inspection of mining sites to ensure compliance with safety standards.
According to him, adherence to these requirements is essential to preventing avoidable deaths, reducing mine collapses and other operational hazards, and protecting workers and host communities.
The Mining Marshals urged industry stakeholders to embrace lawful and responsible mining practices, warning that operators who violate relevant laws and regulations would face appropriate enforcement action.
The NSCDC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources, strengthening regulatory compliance and promoting a safer, more transparent and investment-friendly solid minerals sector.
